I did want to touch on Feed a bit in this blog entry. I, surprisingly, really enjoyed the book. It took me awhile to get into it, but I ended up reading the last 160 pages in one sitting. I just couldn't put it down. I found it to be a really interesting story, because I could see our world getting to be like that eventually, with all the technology. One thing I found really interesting was the lesions, and how once the "celebrities" started getting them, that they were cool. I think this was the author showing how ridiculous it is that we let celebrities tell us what to wear and what products to use. I can honestly say I have never bought a product just because a certain celebrity endorsed. Okay, now that I think about it, I did buy a baseball glove once because a certain player I liked used it. That was when I was nine though. I feel like now I have a much more idea of what I find important in my life. I think for myself, unlike the characters in Feed. I would never let the "feed" (internet, media, etc.) tell me how to live my life.

Who Needs Technology??? This guy!
I wish I could say that, like Thoreau, I could give up all technology and still live a perfectly happy life. I probably could, except for the fact that my girlfriend is six and a half hours away in North Carolina for school. Technology, such as cell phones and computers, is the only form of communication we have when we are both at school. In the summer, I believe I could live without technology. I believe, if I had my girlfriend and other friends with me, I would have no trouble living in the woods in a cabin without technology. I do not, however, think I would be able to live alone. I would get way too bored all by myself without any way of communicating with anyone. I don't think that's necessarily a bad thing though. My friends are what's important to me, so why should I have to live without talking to them?

I laughed at your title :) And yes, I agree that technology has enabled us to maintain our relationships, even when we are greatly distanced from one another. I'm glad to hear you enjoyed Feed. I think it's a really savvy critique about where society is (or will be) today.
ReplyDeleteI feel the same way in that maybe I could live in the woods for a short period of time as long as I had my family and friends around me. I think to do it alone would be impossible for me but with my family and friends by my side we could all get through it together. It took me awhile to get into the novel Feed too but after a bit I enjoyed reading it to find out what was going to happen in the end.
ReplyDeleteI agree that with the company of loved ones I could live in the woods for a year. I know exactly what you mean with the long distance relationship and the advantages that technology offers to sustain these relationships. I've been dating my boyfriend for over two years and I depend on texting, my cell phone, and Skype. With the utilization of technology, relationships are strengthened. I really enjoyed Feed from the beginning. I thought it was really interesting and easy to read (once you got past the slight language barrier). It really got me to think about the future-- will our society turn into a similar society that was portrayed in Feed? I hope not. I found the lesions to be completely disgusting. Why would someone ever harm their body to look "more attractive"? It poses an important point though. Many people, especially at a young age, can be easily influenced by celebrities. Our media has portrayed celebrities and sadly, people strive to act and look like those featured in magazines.
ReplyDeleteWe are a very social generation. We like to keep in touch with everyone with know, several times a day. Technology helps us do that! I think thats why we are so addicted to things such as facebook and our cells phones. It's important for us to stay updated with the people we care about. Sometimes it gets out of hand though. We end up checking our facebooks multiples times a day and when we have time, watch a lot of TV. Feed we a good example of how addicting technology could be. The characters depeneded on their Feeds just as we depend on our different technologies. I, myself, don't buy things just because celebrities have it.. but some people do! Some people don't like the thought of being unique, I guess.
ReplyDeleteI know how you feel man. My girlfriend is far away too and that's why I didn't take the challenge. She would kill me if she didn't hear from me for a week. We are very social now adays with Facebook, Myspace and ecspecially our phones. I like your idea about taking people with you to a cabin to live with because you couldn't live alone. I agree man it would be really hard to live alone.
ReplyDeleteI completely agree with you. My gf would hate not being able to talk to me at all. I totally think I could do without technology if i had my friends and gf by my side but without them I couldn't make it a week. It's just something we don't have to deal with so we don't really worry about it. But, when we start thinking about what would happen if we didn't have this stuff it scares us.
ReplyDeleteI agree with what you say about Feed. I could never let someone make decisions for me even though when we were younger our parents definitely did. But, i just feel making our own decisions is always the best way to go. We learn how to live in this world as in independent person.
