Reality Check

I read Neal Gabler's article and found it very interesting. I disagree with a lot of it, but I believe it does hold some weight, even though it is kind of outdated. I remember when Survivor first came out and how cool it was. I watched it every week with my parents, but not for the reasons Gabler states in his article. Not once did I think about the people on the show playing out life for me. Also, I feel like the people on the show did it for the chance to win money that they needed to make their lives better. Now, with the popularity the show has gained, I think people do it strictly for the chance to become "famous". I think it is sad when people who are already rich go on shows like that. What do they have to gain from that? Nothing, except cheap fame.

The show I watched for this blog was this weeks Jersey Shore episode. It was the third season finale. I hate to admit it, but I watch Jersey Shore every week. I find it amusing and funny. In the episode, Ron and Sammi fought again, which was becoming a very played out storyline. Also, Deena prevented Vinny from courting a female, JWoww got a boyfriend, and the group had to leave their house for the summer. (I wanted to provide a video of them all saying goodbye and leaving, but every video clip was taken off of Youtube for copyright infringement.)

Notice about how I wrote "storyline". I do not think that this show, or any reality show for that matter anymore, is actually reality. I believe that all of them are scripted. That is why I don't think that me watching them is anything like the Coliseum. These people are getting paid to do a television show. Today, reality television is no different than any other program. Specifically on Jersey Shore, I believe these people would be doing the same things whether they were being paid and filmed anyway.

I find the show entertaining not because it is "real people", but because the situations they are in are just down right funny. Every week, Snooki does something ridiculous that is funny, so I watch, and I laugh. There is no harm in that.

  1. "Ron and Sammi fought again..."

It doesn't take three seasons for this to get old? lol

  2. I agree with your statement that now everyone that goes on these reality programs just go on them for the fame. Why would you want video cameras following your 24/7 and then have everyone in America watch what you did last week? Obviously these people like to be filmed and like the attention, otherwise they wouldn't have gone on the show in the first place. I also watched the season finale of Jersey Shore. I am also sick of Ronnie and Sammmi getting into a fight just about every week! I feel like half of the fights are provoked, like I mentioned on Chris' blog. I also find the show really entertaining-- it must be fun to live a ridiculous lifestyle and not care what others have to think. You get a good laugh out of Jersey Shore and I'm sure that is half the reason why people continually watch.

  3. I have only watched a couple of episodes of Jersey Shore so I don't know much about the show. I agree with you in that I think too that a lot of people who go on these reality shows are doing it for the motivation of fame. Some are willing to do anything to get their moment in the spotlight, but is it really worth it? It is sad how some end up with destroyed relationships all because of reality television.

  4. I agree with your idea that all reality shows are scripted. My girlfriend constantly watches The Bachelor and it is the most scripted show I have ever seen. I also agree that it isn't like the Coliseum because of the fact that they are scripted. I think it is funny when your watching a show or movie and can guess what happens next because you have seen a similar scene before. TV is so much of our lives its a shame.

  5. I agree with you. I don't think jersey shore is real and i think they have them do certain things at certain times to make the show more interesting. Jersey shore is very fun to watch i just hate when them two fight and it just makes it boring. It's a "here we go again moment" I just want to see something new besides them fighting and getting drunk and trying to pick up women.

  6. I can honestly say that I have never watched the show, but from what I hear, its just like any typical reality TV show. I agree with, I think many reality TV shows are scripted. Reality TV brings so much drama such as relationships falling apart, and why do we enjoy watching this? It's horrible when you think about it. These people are just getting paid to start drama, and the more drama.. the more people enjoy watching it!
